Getting Started #4 - Reusable Profiles and Workflows

Tutorial Scripts

The Introduction and Profile Concept See This Tutorial Segment

The Customer Programming Software, also known as CPS, allows you to specifically design profiles for many different types of codeplug features. Any multiple-record-node can be considered a possible reusable-profile containing specific feature types. The idea of CPS Profiles is further defined by the ability to select these profiles for use from other areas of the CPS. The order of defining and selecting your profiles is your Workflow strategy. Some examples of these reusable-profiles include: Emergency, Data, Radio Profiles, Conventional Systems, and Trunking Systems. Even Trunking Personalities, and Conventional Personalities can be considered Multiple-Record-Node Profiles.

Some of these selectable profiles may even exist within another profile; the Conventional Personality Frequency Options profiles are an example of profile within a profile. Note that all multiple-record-profiles have a Tool Bar providing the navigation from record to record, and the ability to switch from the Table View to the Single Record View.

Emergency Profiles Designed for Systems and Personalities See This Tutorial Segment

Emergency Features within the Emergency Configuration Node have two elements, Emergency Wide Features and Selectable Emergency Profiles. Emergency Profiles have the two standard communication type choices: Conventional and Trunking.

The Emergency Wide node is a Single Record node; these Emergency features apply to both Conventional and Trunking communications. Emergency Wide features therefore apply on a radio-wide basis to all Emergency capable radio channels.

The Emergency Profile nodes are of course Multiple Record nodes. Many Conventional Emergency Profiles and many Trunking Emergency Profiles may be created.

Once the features of a Conventional Emergency profile are defined, the profile may be selected for use from a Conventional System’s, Emergency Profile Selection field. Similarly, once the features of a Trunking Emergency profile are defined, the profile may be selected for use from a Trunking System’s, Emergency Profile Selection field. Defining your Emergency Profiles prior to selecting them from a System is an example of the top-down workflow strategy.

Data Profiles Designed for Systems See This Tutorial Segment

Data Features within the Data Configuration Node also have two elements, Data Wide features and Data Profiles. Data Profiles have the two standard communication type choices: Conventional and Trunking. Note that the Data Communication Type must be defined for each Profile from the Data Profile Type field.

The Data Wide node is a single record node; these Data features apply to both Conventional and Trunking communications. Note the many different Data Wide features  under General, Programming Over Project 25, the Network Address Translation List, The Data User List, and the Quick Text Message List. These Data Wide features apply on a radio-wide basis to all Data capable radio channels.

The Data Profile node is of course a multiple record node. Many Conventional Data Profiles and many Trunking Emergency Profiles may be created.

Once the features of a Conventional Type Data Profile are defined, the profile may be selected for use from a Conventional System’s, Data Profile Selection field. Similarly, once the features of a Trunking Type Data Profile are defined, the profile may be selected for use from a Trunking System’s, Data Profile Selection field. Defining your Data Profiles prior to selecting them from a System is an example of the top-down workflow strategy.

System Profiles Designed for Personalities See This Tutorial Segment

Conventional Systems and Trunking Systems are also multiple-record-node reusable-profiles.

Selectable profiles can build-on to the functionality of other profiles. As has been previously mentioned in this lesson, Emergency and Data Profiles are selected for use by individual Conventional or Trunking Systems. Therefore Emergency and Data Profiles add to the functionality of the System profiles where they are selected. And then once the Conventional System and the Trunking System functionality is defined, these Systems may then be selected for the appropriate Conventional and Trunking Personalities; this further exemplifies and reinforces the need for implementing the top-down workflow strategy.

Conventional Systems Profiles are selected for use from a Conventional Personality’s, ASTRO System field or Non-ASTRO System field. Similarly, Trunking System Profiles are, selected for use from a Trunking Personality’s, Trunking System Selection field.

Radio Profiles Designed for Radio Channels See This Tutorial Segment

Radio Profiles are also multiple-record-node reusable-profiles. For your convenience there are three pre-defined Radio Profiles, these Profiles may be modified to meet your needs.

As is the case with almost all multiple-record-node windows, you may easily add more records, and you may rename each Profile to an appropriate name.

Once your Radio Profiles are defined, these profiles are selected from the Zone Channel Assignment Channels Page. Note that as is the case with all other profiles, a profile may be selected more than once; in this case, a profile may be re-used for more than one channel. Defining your Radio Profiles prior to selecting them from a channel is another example of the top-down workflow strategy.

Personality Profiles Designed for Radio Channels See This Tutorial Segment

Conventional and Trunking Personalities are also multiple-record-node reusable-profiles.

First, let’s take a look at the complete top-down workflow strategy. From the top, Data and Emergency Profiles add to the functionality of Conventional or Trunking Systems, Conventional and Trunking System Profiles add to the functionality of Conventional and Trunking Personalities. And then from the Zone Channel Assignment, Channels Page. Convention and Trunking Personalities are selected for channels within zones; therefore these Personality selections create the final functionality for the actual channels of the radio.

Do note that within each Conventional Personality, there are also Conventional Frequency Options Profiles. These Frequency profiles are also selected from the Zone Channel Assignment Channels Page. Very similarly within each Trunking Personality, there are Trunking Talkgroups Profiles. These Talkgroup profiles are also selected from the Zone Channel Assignment, Channels Page.

For Conventional Channels, first select the appropriate Conventional Personality, then select the appropriate Frequency Options profile, from the same Personality.

For Trunking Channels first select the appropriate Trunking Personality, then select the appropriate Talkgroup profile, from the same Personality.

In this codeplug case, some of your Radio Profiles have already been defined and selected for specific radio channels.

And do be aware that there are many other features to be considered that our not mentioned in this lesson, however the top-down workflow strategy is the same.

This concludes the CPS tutorial on Reusable Profiles and Workflows.
